Time flies when you're having fun! Here is this week's news.
This Weekend
There is no GDHL race this weekend. We are training GS on Birches both Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 AM. Our schedule for the rest of the season is pretty simple. This weekend and the following two weekends, we are training GS both days at 9:30 AM. There is no Saturday class on the last weekend of our program (the first weekend of March) because of the Club championships. On the last Sunday, we will have dual slaloms both morning and afternoon.
The final "regular season" interclub race is at the Peaks on Saturday afternoon. Craigleith is aiming to protect its lead over the Peaks in order to get a home hill advantage for the 2013 finals. The 2012 finals are at the Peaks in two weeks.
Friday Training
Mike Kristy will be coaching GS on Birches tomorrow. Matt DiStefano will be coaching GS the following Friday. There is no Friday training the week after that, due to men's day.
Results
I have not seen the GDHL results from last weekend, although I saw TSB blow out of his bindings on two consecutive runs. Fortunately, on the second attempt, he got out of the starting gate and did not slide halfway down the hill on his face. He must have been distracted by remembering the interclub race at Craigleith, which was a huge success for the home team last weekend in the first ever interclub slalom. Bill Bigelow and Steve Gailits were first and second in their age category, Allan LaChance won his category, Ian Latimer, Trent Winstone, Craig Shibley and Glenn McKay were 3, 4, 5 and 7 in the largest category of the day, which was won by Bebe Zoricic. Ross Kappele and Randy Dalton were second and third in another big category. Craigleith coach Pat Wright was first overall, with the lead of over 4 seconds, and for a change there were actually others in this category so he scored good points.
I will try to get another note out if the GDHL results arrive. Carrie has also promised to send the speed gun results from the Super G.
Video Etc.
Here is a compilation of short clips of World Cup skiers, mainly Canadians, but also featuring Lindsey Vonn making some impressive GS turns.
Remember to use the flats as you move away from the National chair to work on your edging skills. You can't get big edge angles at low speeds, but you can work very effectively on your stance, balance and coordination.
Fashion News
Carrie has already abandoned her crutches and lawn chair, and her side zip pants. Saturday's outfit included the Crown Jules jacket (designed by Julia Mancuso) in Blue Bay (some would say turquoise and POC might say Julia blue) with white pants. Sunday brought a variation on the peat and heat theme from a few weekends ago, with the dark Breaker jacket and pants in "Blue My Mind" (cobalt), which was also featured in the zippers of the jacket. With colder weather called for this weekend, I foresee fur collars being prominent.
Kudos to Annie Haldimand-Tait for her sunflower yellow jacket last weekend!
Kids in Surgery (joke courtesy of Cindy Baubock)
Two little kids are in the hospital, lying on stretchers next to each other outside the operating room – the first surgeries of the day. The first kid leans over and asks "What are you in here for?" The second kid says "I'm in here to get my tonsils out and I'm a little nervous." The first kid says "You've got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep and when you wake up they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It's a breeze." The second kid then asks "What are you here for?" The first kid says "A circumcision." "Whoa!" the second kid replies. "Good luck buddy. I had that done when I was born. Couldn't walk for a year."
See you on the weekend,
JWM
